Sloooooooowwwwww Renders

For some reason the tooth brushing sequence is taking a long time (30 mins!) to render a frame. Mentalray was doing a really good job with the other sequences, which are essentially the same... just Uno and a couple props.

I noticed that some frames render in about 4 mins and some take 32 mins, could this variation be due to motion blur?

Anybody know rendering or mentalray enough to comment?

  1. Motion blur with MR is painfully slow.. it's one of the reasons I don't render with MR any more. I stick with the Maya renderer.. it takes a bit more tinkering to make it look as good, but the fast(er) render times are worth it.

  2. That's what I figured.. no way around the MR motion blur slowness. Ah well, good to know for the next project! Thanks SunnyK!

  3. actually mr has 4 kinds of motion blur
    standard (suuuperslow)
fast rasterizer (still slow but accurate)
image based (fast but not accurate)
exporting motion vectors and blurring in after effects with reelsmart blur (fast and moderately accurate but you can adjust it "on the fly")
    check them out
going back to your rendertime problem it might not actually have been motion blur, maybe you didn't turn off raytracing or you had some sort of super demanding shadow on.
    cheers
